The Airmen Memorial Building (AMB) is the home of the
Air Force Sergeants Association, the Airmen Memorial Foundation (AMF)
and the Airmen Memorial Museum (AMM). This three-story structure is the
sole monument to Air Force enlisted personnel in the national capital
area. The building is dedicated as a "living memorial" to the millions
of American men and women who have worn the enlisted uniform of the
United States Air Force, the Army Air Corps and the United States Army
Air Forces since 1907.
The building was dedicated on May 3, 1981, in celebration of the 20th
anniversary of the Air Force Sergeants Association. The AMB mortgage was
symbolically shredded, five years ahead of schedule, during the 2000
AFSA International Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana. The 33,000
square-foot modern office building/museum was constructed from donations
by AFSA members and is maintained by their continuing support through
direct donations and participation in the AFSA Holiday Card program.
On the first floor of the building is the AFSA Support Operations
Directorate, including the mail room, printing facility and storage
areas. Completing the first floor area are the Airmen Memorial Museum
galleries containing exhibits about the history of Total Air
Force enlisted Airmen. The second floor consists of tenants
offices. The remaining AFSA offices: The Executive, Military and
Government Relations, Communications and Technology, Accounting and
Finance, and Member and Field Relations directorates, computer center
and conference rooms are on the third floor of the building. This floor
also currently provides office space for the Armed Forces Veterans Homes
Foundation (AFVHF) a community-service project of the association
founded to address quality-of-life issues affecting the nation's
veterans community.
The Airmen Memorial Building is conveniently located adjacent to Exit 7
on the Capital Beltway (U.S. 95), approximately one-half mile from the
Branch Avenue station of Washington's Metro inter-city transportation
system and one mile from Andrews Air Force Base. Within a short drive
are highlights of the nation's military and civilian aviation history
including the Garber Aircraft Restoration and Preservation Facilities of
the National Air and Space Museum, the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
in Greenbelt and the Aviation Museum at America's oldest continuously
operating airport located in College Park. A Country Inn and Suites is
located immediately to the rear of the AMB.
