HEALTH CARE

AFSA continues to work closely with the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs to improve the health care programs of those serving and who have served--and the health care benefits of family members and survivors.  During an era of ever-increasing budgetary scrutiny, it is critical that full funding is appropriated for these programs.  We will continue to remind the “bean counters” about past government promises, expectations created, and the unique service and sacrifice of those who defend this nation.  Annual efforts to decrease health care benefits and raise benefit costs of military retirees and their family members and survivors must be stopped.  Your AFSA representatives are fully engaged in this effort.

H.R. 816, Rep Chet Edwards, D-TX, To amend title 10, United States Code, to prohibit certain increases in fees for military health care.

H.R. 2405, "Richard Helm Veterans' Access to Local Health Care Options and Resources Act," Rep. Tom Latham, R-IA,   to amend title 38, United States Code, to provide veterans enrolled in the health system of the Department of Veterans Affairs the option of receiving covered health services through facilities other than those of the Department.  In rural areas this is important because the nearest VA health care facility may be a few hours driving distance and it is too difficult for some veterans to reach.

H.R. 2583, "Women Veterans Access to Care Act," Rep. Leonard Boswell, D-IA, to direct the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to improve health care for women veterans.  The changes include physical health, mental health, rural health care access, employing woman health care professionals throughout the VA, conducting a study on the needs of women veterans, and conducting outreach activities to women veterans and their families.

H.R. 3590: the "Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act," by Rep. Charles Rangel, D-NY.

H.R. 4551, "Keep Our Promise to America's Military Retirees Act," Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-MD, to restore health care coverage to retired members of the uniformed services who joined prior to December 7, 1956.

H.R. 4593, "Keeping Faith With the Greatest Generation Military Retirees Act of 2010," Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-MD,   to amend part B of title XVIII of the Social Security Act to waive Medicare part B premiums for certain military retirees who joined before December 7, 1956.  These retirees were promised in good faith that if they served 20 years and retired from the military that they would receive free health care for life.

H.R.4872:  the "Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010," by Rep. John Spratt, D-SC, to make a number of health-related financing and revenue changes to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act enacted by H.R.3590 and modify higher education assistance provisions.

H.R.4923:   the “TRICARE Dependent Coverage Extension Act,” by Rep. Martin Heinrich, D-NM, to amend title 10, United States Code, to extend TRICARE coverage to certain dependents under the age of 26.

H.R.5206:  Rep Harry Teague, D-NM  To amend title 38, United States Code, to increase the maximum age for children eligible for medical care under the CHAMPVA program. This will extend coverage till the age of 26.
