AFSA International Convention Overview

THE SUMMIT is the overarching event that brings together several key gatherings, starting with the AFSA International Convention. Attendance at the AFSA-IC is a pivotal event for the AFSA’s general membership, where vital organizational business takes place. International Committees, Division and Chapter Leadership, Delegates, and Members come together to share their votes at the annual elections, exchange valuable insights, discuss and approve AFSA’s legislative platform, celebrate the past year’s success, and set strategic goals and objectives for the future of the Association.

By policy, AFSA is required to plan and execute at least one annual membership meeting. This meeting—AFSA’s Annual Membership Meeting (International Convention)—is held at a location and on dates approved by a majority vote of the International Board of Directors. For 2025, the Convention will be held at the Hilton Orlando, Florida, from August 7–10. This event allows AFSA to conduct its annual business as a 501(c)(19) veterans service organization, celebrate the accomplishments of the past year, connect with members, and foster our strong sense of “family-ship.”

The Professional Education and Development Symposium (PEDS) is a separate but complementary event and is the primary mechanism through which AFSA fulfills its number one objective: to enhance the professionalism of a highly dedicated and professional corps of uniformed services personnel. AFSA works in close coordination with the Office of the Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force (OCMSAF) and the Office of the Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force (OCMSSF) to host key leader engagements, including the CMSAF Senior Enlisted Leadership Council, CMSSF Senior Leaders Conference, Space Force Conference, and the 7/8 Enlisted Leaders Conferences. PEDS begins immediately after the International Convention concludes on Sunday evening.

AFSA also coordinates with the Department of the Air Force to obtain a Widely Attended Gathering (WAG) letter of support. This letter is developed through the OCMSAF and OCMSSF and distributed from Headquarters Air Force to the field; AFSA Headquarters does not receive a copy. Additionally, the CMSAF and CMSSF encourage MAJCOM Command Chiefs to promote maximum participation in PEDS.
WAG guidance/support letter may include such things as:  THE SUMMIT offers free registration and attendance for all Department of the Air Force civilian employees, as well as Active, Reserve, and Guard uniformed services members and their families, subject to supervisory approval (including any official travel). Personnel with formal roles in the symposium may attend in a funded Air or Space Forces capacity when participation directly relates to official duties or authorized training. For others, funded travel may be approved if attendance is mission-related and directly benefits the member and organization; permissive TDY may be an option when funded TDY is not authorized.
 
Q: What will be covered during the Professional Education and Professional Development? 
A. Specific details vary each year as the Agenda is developed. Past SUMMIT's have included a wealth of strategic, developmental, and motivational speakers providing training and information to foster the development of lethal mission ready airmen and guardians.
                 
Q. Why it's important chapter leadership attends?
A. During the Convention discussions will be had, vote will be cased that will continue to shape our great association
 
Q. Why installation's should fund this?
A. DAF will not fund attendance to an MSO/VSO annual membership meeting (convention)… However, the Professional Education and Professional Development is worked in coordination with the OCMSAF / OCMSSF
 
Q. Why bases should send as many Airmen and Guardians as they can?
A. For the wide range of Professional Education and Professional Development opportunities. Participants are often "re-blued, refreshed, and re-engerized" improving moral and mental clarity. The networking
