“The nation owes a great debt to its veterans, whose service to the nation spans every decade, every year, every day of our country's existence. Through untold courage and sacrifice, America’s veterans have secured the liberty which the founding fathers sought to establish here in the new world. Whenever and wherever the nation has called -- in times of darkness and danger as well as in times of peace and prosperity -- America's veterans have been there.” -- General Colin L. Powell, U.S. Army
To think there exists men and women courageous enough to risk their lives for those they have never met and a system that has inadequately paid its retribution are simply mind-blowing. Providing adequate benefits for our veterans is not only a promise made that must be kept but is also a moral obligation on behalf of those who seek to rightfully represent America’s veteran population; just over 18 million strong. AFSA proudly views Veteran and Retiree Benefits as a major component of our legislative platform and lobbying efforts.
Included in this edition of the 116th Congressional AFSA Legislative List is a compilation of legislative items pertinent to our Legislative Platform’s “Veteran/Retiree Benefits” Focus Group. The political arena at-large is an ever-changing ecosystem whose oversight and accountability requires a watchful eye and a professional, honest, and unified grassroots advocacy movement. AFSA’s Legislative Lists serve as an effective key that will unlock the doors to a more receptive polity and well-informed populous.
Support rendered to the legislative program by members of AFSA is essential to the success in reaching our goals. On the national level, well-timed letters, emails, and phone calls in response to solicited requests and calls for action can make the difference between legislative failure and success. On the local and state level, such communication is no less important.
